Dears,
Assalamu Alaikum Warahmathullaahi Wa Barakaathuhu
All Praises are due to Almighty Allah. May Peace and Blessings be showered upon his last messenger Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him), his family and companions!
Islam is a religion that teaches esteemed qualities such as mercy, humanity, unity, peace, coexistence, and brotherhood. Islam prefers to spread the best of humane qualities to the world, and thereby provide a guide for oneself and everyone around them to live with peace and tranquility.
Allahu Ta’aala mentions in the Quran:
وَمَا أَرْسَلْنَاكَ إِلا رَحْمَةً لِلْعَالَمِينَ (الأنبياء :107)
“And We have not sent you but as mercy for all the worlds.” (Surah Anbiya: 107)
Allahu Ta’aala has sent The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) as a mercy to mankind, and as a person who exhibits compassion.
“In the same way We made you a moderate Ummah (community)” (Al Baqara: 143)
The concept of middle path is one of the important aspects of Islam. Following the religion to the extremes or being negligent about it is not permitted. Further, it has guided one to uphold the middle path of all affairs pertaining to this world and the hereafter. It is hereby noted to be unbiased while maintaining a balance, and to be fair to everyone by respecting the feelings of each other.
“Be not excessive in your Faith” (Annisaa: 171)
It has been prohibited to transgress in faith. Even if it be an affair with Allah or his Messenger, this means that to observe temperance and not to transgress the limits prescribed by Allah.
A'isha, the wife of Allah's Apostle (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him), reported that Allah's Messenger (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: 'A'isha, verily Allah is kind and He loves kindness and confers upon kindness which he does not confer upon severity and does not confer upon anything else besides it (kindness). (Saheeh Muslim: 2593)
This teaching of the Prophet elucidates that engaging in violence is vehemently condemned as well as to follow elegance and softness.
“Do not revile those whom they invoke other than Allah, lest they should revile Allah in transgression without having knowledge.” (An’Aam: 108).
This verse makes us realize to respect the religious sentiments of others.
“There is no compulsion in Faith.” (Baqara: 256)
As a verse descended during the era of Madinah, it is not only a prime proof of religious freedom given to man, it also explains how one could contemplate independently and is encouraged to act upon accordingly.
Another verse that confirms this view is as follows:
لَـكُمْ دِيْنُكُمْ وَلِىَ دِيْنِ (سورة الكافرون : 06)
“You have your way, and I have my Way.” (Kaafiroon: 06)
“.. Allah does not like the wrongdoers.” (Al’Imran: 57)
Islam does not permit any form of injustice to Muslims, Non-Muslims or other creatures.
Abu Dharr (Radiyallahu anhu) reported Allah's Messenger (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) as saying that Allah, the Exalted and Glorious, said: "O My servants, I have forbidden oppression for Myself and have made it forbidden amongst you, so do not oppress one another. (Saheeh Muslim : 2577).
It was related on the authority of Abu Said Al-Khudri (Radiyallahu anhu) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: "There should be neither harming nor reciprocating harm." (Musthathrak al Hakim : 2345)
“That whoever kills a person not in retaliation for a person killed, nor (as a punishment) for spreading disorder on the earth, is as if he has killed the whole of humankind, and whoever saves the life of a person is as if he has saved the life of the whole of humankind.” (Al Maa’idah: 32)[1]
The Holy Quran expressly states that under no circumstance can one take the life of an innocent.
The above Quranic verses highlight the fact that Allahu Ta’aala has sent the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) as a person of compassion to this world, and also explain that Islam condemns extremism, and exhorts moderation at all times. and not to be unfair with others. Islam prohibits suicide, categorizing it as a grave sin and has also warned that those who engage in it will have to face harsh punishment in the hereafter. This has been confirmed in more than 40 Hadiths.
Islam exhorts Muslims to follow the law of the land, and does not permit individuals to take the law into their own hands.
It is evident that as at present, there are certain misguided individuals claiming to be Muslims across the world who have been brainwashed, espousing extremist and violent ideologies that are totally against Islam, resulting in Islamophobia across the world.
The All Ceylon Jammiyyathul Ulama with other Muslim organizations, collectively declared on 2015.07.23 that there is no connection between extremist ideologies and Islam. [2] The Fatwas of international Fatwa bodies also state accordingly.
We unreservedly condemned the dastardly attacks on Easter Sunday, 2019.04.21, carried out by Zaharan Hashim and his accomplices, which resulted in deaths and injury to innocents, and the desecration and destruction of churches and hotels. Further, we released a fatwa to reject the janazas of the suicide bombers and not give them an Islamic burial.[3]
Zaharan Hashim and his extremist accomplices had misquoted the Quranic verses and Hadith. There is no warrant either in the Holy Quran or the Hadith to justify their dastardly acts. In fact, we have clarified this position in the book titled ‘NO EXTREMISM IN THE NAME OF RELIGION’, published by us in collaboration with The Department of Muslim Religious and Cultural Affairs.[4]
We urge all Muslims to be vigilant and observant at all times to guard against extremism in order to safeguard the community and our Motherland.

Commemorating The Victims Of The Easter Sunday Attacks – 21st April 2019
21st of April, marks one of the darkest days in the history of our Motherland and today we commemorate the innocent lives that were lost in the Easter Sunday Attacks.
The ACJU, on behalf of the Muslim Civil Societies and the Muslim Community, reiterate our strong condemnation of the atrocious crime against humanity, carried out by terrorists. There is no place in Islam or in any religion for any form of extremism or terrorism.
The Muslims of Sri Lanka have been living harmoniously with all other communities of this country for more than 1000 years. It is evident throughout history that the Muslim community stands together with all Sri Lankans at all times, and works towards strengthening peace and harmony of this nation.
Unfortunately many evil elements have been targeting the Muslim community for various malicious agendas and have been creating confusion and doubt among the other communities about the Muslims.
We Sri Lankans should unitedly defeat such conspiracies that divide and create disharmony within communities, by promoting and supporting all efforts that are made towards building peaceful coexistence among communities.
To restore understanding between the communities, ACJU pledges to build Harmony centers, libraries in mosques, schools and associations. To prevent the religious space from being misused and abused, ACJU recognizes the paramount importance of working with government and other faith leaders to regulate the religious space and build moderation, toleration and coexistence.
The ACJU is prepared to provide any necessary support in relation to religious counseling and guidance to the Youth who are currently in custody. And we have also been working on efforts among the community in providing the correct interpretations and teachings of Islam.
The ACJU has also initiated a ‘National Network Project (NNP)’, with the objective of establishing and strengthening the reconciliation and coexistence among all the communities.
We request all to pray for those effected and their families, and to pray for a peaceful Sri Lanka.
Mufti M.I.M. Rizwe
President – ACJU
